A member of a complex of five xeric subspecies with tuberous rhizomes spread in the Balkan peninsula (this subspecies is a west Pontic element and is the single one to advance northwards up to southern Moldavia).

In Flora Europaea vol. 4 it is said that the complex of Centaurea napulifera Rochel (considered by some authors as a distinct section - Napuliferi (Stefanoff & T. Georgiev) Bancheva & Raimondo of the detached genus Cyanus Miller) is endemic to the Balkans but from a biogeographic point of view it would be a surprise for this complex not to be present also in the nearby Asia MInor. Well actually it is present there and the surprise was the so late discovery of it - read the abstract of Kaya and Bancheva (2009). who publish a new taxon from this complex, Cyanus eflanensis Kaya et Bancheva (which otherwise will be considered as the sixth subspecies in the Centaurea napulifera complex by other authors) described in their article as a vicariant of thirkei.

The pictures below are of a low resolution ad were taken in May 2004 in my garden from Floresti, Cluj county. The plant reproduced vegetatively very slowly from some tubers collected at Cheia, Constanta county, Dobrudja in April 1996.
